The (C.A.R.E.) Home Support Toolkit

Home Support Toolkit

The (C.A.R.E.) Home Support Toolkit – Pendle was developed in collaboration with Neil Floyd from Colourful Memories CIC and the Dementia Positive Pendle Team. Neil created and illustrated the book, while the Dementia Positive Pendle Team generously supported him in providing available services in Pendle.

Neil has personal experience with dementia, having cared for both of his parents who were diagnosed with the condition. He was the primary carer for his dad who had Parkinson’s disease and later developed dementia, Neil began caring for his dad when he was in his early twenties. After his dad’s passing in 2013, Neil became a full-time carer for his mum, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2017.

Following his dad’s passing in 2013, Neil enrolled in a three-year arts and design degree course at Blackburn University Centre. During his studies, inspired by the time he spent colouring with his dad, he developed the idea of using colouring as a tool for conversation with people living with dementia.

By combining a Care Journal with colouring activities, he found he could effectively encourage conversation through therapeutic practices. In 2019, Neil completed a Master’s degree in Arts Health at UCLAN in Preston. He now provides arts health sessions in Burnley, Pendle, and Hyndburn.

The book serves as more than just an informational resource; it offers unique insights into arts-health practices developed at UCLAN, along with ideas and tips based on both academic knowledge and real-world experiences. It also highlights community groups and services available in Pendle. While many community groups in Pendle do exceptional work, many people are unaware of them. This resource aims to bridge that gap.

Neil’s motivation for creating the book is to share his experiences, making the years he spent caring for both of his parents as meaningful as possible.

The book serves as an essential resource for carers of loved ones living with a dementia diagnosis who are beginning their journey. It offers valuable tips, insights, and information on how to support and care for someone living at home.

Additionally, it highlights the importance of engaging in activities that promote stimulation, conversation, and positive emotions. The booklet covers various topics, including:
